Peru: Camposol ships first Hass avocado container to Japan

Peruvian produce giant Camposol has marked a milestone in international trade, having shipped its first ever container of Hass avocados to Japan. Hass Camposol

The company said the development represented a 'great challenge' and followed several months of arduous work.

It added the shipments to Japan would strengthen its commercial strategy in Asia.

Having passed the inspections required by the Japanese Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MAFF) and the corresponding authorities, Camposol shipped its first container of avocados to the Asian country on June 17.

Camposol managing director of avocados, Allan Cooper, said Japan was a country with high potential where avocados are known and the annual consumption reaches 50-60,000 metric tons (MT).

“We will gain market share in Japan from year to year," he said.

"This is an introductory year, but we are confident that in the next years there will be a strong increase in our avocado exports to Asia, and Japan will definitely be a relevant country due to the already developed level of consumption."

Through a commercial agreement with one of the major avocado importers in Japan, plans have been made for an initial sales campaign in supermarkets.

"We will gain market share and consumer preference. We want to position the avocado as one of the most representative Peruvian fruits on a global level," Cooper said.

During 2016, Peruvian Hass avocado exports to China and Japan are projected to reach 5,000MT.
