Colombia: Uniban to open inspection zones in key banana-growing region

Colombian grower-owned company Uniban is opening what it describes as the first inspection zones under the care of trade authorities in the key banana-growing region of Urabá.

Uniban said the opening of the zones marked a "milestone" in the region's trade transformation.

The zones will allow for simultaneous inspections by anti-narcotics police, customs agents, the National Food and Drug Surveillance Institute and the Colombian Agricultural Institute.

The inspection zones will be inaugurated on March 23 by Colombian trade minister María Claudia Lacouture, according to a release.

The company said the development represented "the improvement of competitivity for the country's exporters, facilitating the process of inspecting cargo, while saving time and money."

"Previously, a customs agent had to go in search of each entity to inspect the cargo entering the port, moving it, opening it and manipulating it on multiple occasions, which caused additional costs in the trade process, but thanks to the Inspection Zones, this situation will change," it said.

Total investments by Uniban reached 1.5 billion pesos (US$510,000).
