Brazilian mango exports surged in peak period

One of the world's top mango exporters has outdone itself this year in both sheer volume and overall value, with the Netherlands and the United States cementing their positions as the leading destination markets.

According to statistics released by Brazilian Foreign Trade Information Analysis System (Aliceweb), exports of the tropical fruit for the peak August to November period rose 14% year-on-year to hit 111,218 metric tons (MT).

Almost three-quarters of that volume went to the Netherlands (+20%; 47,666MT) as a re-export hub for Europe and the United States (+16%; 32,286MT).

This not only represents significant growth on last year, but is about 40% up on what was close to 80,000MT in shipments for the 2014 peak harvest.

While average freight on board (FOB) prices were down in the United States by 10 cents at US$0.93 per kilo, an average five-cent price rise in the Netherlands to US$1.08 per kilo meant overall export value rose steadily too, jumping 12% to US$122.8 million.

Out of the country's top 10 mango markets, only two countries - Portugal (-40%) and Belgium (-37%) - saw declines but the impact on overall volume was minimal.

After the Netherlands and the United States, the top markets were the United Kingdom (+15%; 9,415MT), Spain (+13%; 7,577MT) and Canada (+23%; 5,965MT).

The largest increase by market in percentage terms, albeit off a low base, was Russia with its imports of Brazilian mangoes rising 97% to 899MT.
