U.S.: APHIS lifts Medfly quarantine area in Los Angeles County

The U.S. Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service (APHIS) has removed the Mediterranean fruit fly (Medfly) quarantine area in the Sun Valley area of Los Angeles County, California, effective June 23.

The control zone was established on August 30 by APHIS and the California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA), following the detection of three adult Medflies over the prior two weeks. Dozens of additional detections of adults and larvae were made over the following few weeks.

APHIS said that since that time the transient Medfly population has been eliminated. The pest targets more than 250 types of fruits and vegetables.

"APHIS removed the quarantine area after three Medfly life-cycles elapsed with negative detections in this area," it said.
