Peru reigns supreme in table grape and avocado exports—but not without challenges

March 24 , 2026

Table grape and Hass avocado exports continue to boost the Peruvian agro-industry. However, the sector faces ever-growing challenges, including fierce international competition, pressing regulatory demands, and high-quality standard requirements.

Representatives of both industries gathered for a webinar hosted by Peruvian market analysis firm Fluctuante, where they reviewed and analyzed the present and outlook for both sectors.

Peruvian leadership in table grapes

The Peruvian table grape industry is going through one of the most dynamic periods in its history. According to Alejandro Cabrera, Supply Chain Planning Deputy Manager at MIGIVA Group, Peru has consolidated its position as the world's main exporter of the fruit by volume.

The sector generates more than $2 billion in FOB value and directly employs more than 120,000 people.

Current projections indicate that the country will surpass the 80 million exported boxes barrier for the second year in a row. According to data from the Peruvian Table Grape Producers Association (Provid), by week 8 of the 2025-2026 campaign, shipments had already reached 82.5 million boxes, exceeding the record for the same period in the previous season.

Cabrera emphasized that, despite several weeks remaining for table grape shipment, "everything indicates that the sector will close the campaign with a new historical record, surpassing the 83 million exported boxes registered last season."

Peruvian grapes are currently sold in over 50 markets, with the United States as the main destination, accounting for 52 percent of the market. The country is followed by Europe (12 percent), Mexico (eight percent), and Canada (four percent).

However, this strong dependence on the North American market poses a risk to the sector, especially during periods of high shipment concentration. Cabrera explained that during the last season, Peru exported more than three million boxes per week for 15 consecutive weeks, putting pressure on export logistics.

Varietal change and new demands

The industry has also experienced a profound varietal transformation. Cabrera pointed out that 61 percent of exports currently consist of white seedless varieties, while 25 percent are red seedless varieties.

In contrast, the iconic Red Globe now accounts for about 10 percent of shipments, reflecting a shift towards varieties more in demand by consumers.

Among the main varieties are Sweet Globe (26 percent), Autumn Crisp (20 percent), and Allison (11 percent), which together account for about 60 percent of exports.

Despite the good performance, the sector faces new regulatory demands. Cabrera warned that the European Union will require that agricultural product packaging incorporate 30 percent recycled plastic by 2030 and 50 percent by 2040. These sustainability regulations are forcing exporters to invest in new systems to meet the new requirements.

Furthermore, the growth of production in China, which already reaches nearly 15 million tons of grapes, could intensify competition. According to projections from the United States Department of Agriculture, the Asian country could overtake Peru as the world’s leading exporter in the coming years, modifying global market balance.

Another challenge is the pressure to diversify logistics to reduce pressure on the port of Callao. In this vein, the industry is currently promoting the use of alternative terminals such as Chancay, Paita, Salaverry, and Pisco.

However, diversification is gaining traction not only in logistics. Peruvian producers are also looking to expand their market diversification, with exploration efforts into emerging destinations such as Vietnam, Indonesia, and Kazakhstan.

Hass avocado consolidates its expansion

Hass avocado is another pillar of Peruvian agro-export.

During the virtual meeting, Arturo Medina, General Manager of ProHass, emphasized that the sector is in a period of consolidation after more than a decade of expansion.

Peru currently has over 200,000 planted acres and, in the 2025 campaign, exported close to 723,000 tons, equivalent to 32,700 containers. This represents nearly 38 percent year-on-year growth.

However, the increase in global consumption has incentivized new competitors to enter the market. In the last eight years, countries like Colombia have expanded their cultivated area by more than 200 percent, while Kenya has registered increases exceeding 600 percent.

Quality and market development

Medina warned that one of the industry’s main risks is the product's reputation, as some opportunistic exporters ship fruit that does not meet maturation standards.

"The problem is that when low-quality fruit reaches international markets, the impact affects the entire industry," he noted.

The executive also highlighted the strong social impact of the crop, which involves more than 30,000 farmers in the country, many of whom are small producers.

Europe remains the main destination for Peruvian Hass avocados, accounting for 63 percent of shipments, followed by the United States. Furthermore, the Asian market, especially Japan, has shown significant growth, while China remains a high-potential destination.

In the executive's opinion, the growth of the global avocado market cannot be sustained solely by production, as promotion and marketing play a central role in educating consumers.
