Brazil's fruit export deal in numbers

Brazil's lime and orange exports to Europe have shot up this year while apple shipments have plummeted, according to nationalĀ statistics service Aliceweb from January through July.

The official numbers for the category "lemons and limes" - which is mostly limes - show a 1% drop in volumeĀ to 68,580 metric tons (MT), but this can mostly be explained by sharp falls in exports to the Middle East.

Not only was the volume greater, but prices were higher too by a marginĀ of 15% at US$0.94 per kilogram (2.2 pounds).

Lemon and lime exports to the UAE dropped 41% to 5,095MT while Saudi Arabia bought close to a third less year-on-year at 614MT.

While just over 1,000MT less volume entered the Netherlands, this was more than compensated by upticks in the U.K. (9%), Germany (59%), Belgium (66%), Portugal (821%) and Spain (22%).

While orange exports are much less relevant export at that time of year, at something like a fifth of the volume of limes, theirĀ output was very strong with an 83% jump to 13,094MT.

The leading markets forĀ Brazilian orangesĀ were Portugal, Paraguay, France, Uruguay and Spain, with the latter as the only main market that saw a decline in purchases. The average price per kilogram was down 21% at US$0.35.

For apples, Brazil's export volume dropped by 49% to 30,637MT, while prices fellĀ 13% down to US$0.59 per kilo.

The leading market Bangladesh slashed its imports of Brazilian apples by almost 8,000MT, while the second-largest market the Netherlands received in the area of 7,000MT fewer apples from Brazil.

Reductions were also seen in Portugal (-7%), Ireland (-49%), Russia (-29%), France (-48%) and the U.K. (-65%).

In terms of the export deal ahead, Brazil embarks this month on its melon and watermelon campaign with the export peak usually occurring between October and November.

Last season'sĀ results were very positive for both categories, with watermelon exports up 69% at 57,228MT and melon shipments rising 9% to 223,374MT. The Netherlands and the U.K. account for the bulk of exports for both, but sharp upticks were seen in 2015-16 in the UAE, Ireland and Paraguay.

Even though volume was much higher, prices only fell slightly by 7% for bothĀ watermelons and melons, with average prices per kilo of US$0.49 and US$0.68 respectively.
