Spain expands access to China with agreements to export pistachios and dried figs

Spain and China have reached new agreements to strengthen bilateral cooperation and consolidate the European country’s position as a safe and competitive supplier in one of the world's most relevant markets.

During the official visit of the President of the Spanish Government, Pedro Sánchez, both nations signed six agreements, including five collaboration protocols and a memorandum of understanding on denominations of origin.

The signing of the protocol stands out to the fruit sector as it allows the export of pistachios and dried figs from Europe to Asia. Up until this point, Spanish fruit shipments to the Asian Giant included citrus, peaches, plums, table grapes, persimmons, and nuts.

The Spanish Ministry of Agriculture, Fisheries and Food reported that this milestone is the result of a negotiation process initiated in September 2024, following the agreement reached in 2023 for almond export.

The necessary technical exchange between the parties took place in 2025, and, subsequently, dried fig was incorporated at the request of the exporting sector in the European country. Finally, in March 2026, a joint protocol was successfully closed, enabling the entry of both products to the Chinese market.

Prior to the start of shipments, Chinese authorities visited Spanish production zones for inspection, a key step to validate the productive and phytosanitary systems of the European country.

With these agreements, the country continues to strengthen its presence in the Chinese market, diversifying its exportable offer and generating new opportunities for the agri-food sector.
