NZ: MPI launches three new business units

New Zealand's Ministry for Primary Industries has established three new business units aimed at providing increased focus on some of the organization's core responsibilities.

The new entities are Biosecurity New Zealand, Fisheries New Zealand and New Zealand Food Safety.

"The business units are intended to lift the visibility of the valuable work we do in biosecurity, fisheries, forestry and food safety and increase transparency for our stakeholders and the public," MPI director-general Martyn Dunne said.

"Our new structure will enable us to deliver on MPI's ambitious agenda for the primary sector and New Zealand. Remaining one Ministry allows us to continue strengthening the capabilities and expertise we have built since our formation."

On Dec. 1, 2017, the government issued a directive to create a stronger focus on MPI's core responsibilities. Four options for structural changes were considered and the cabinet decided that four new branded business units within MPI was the best option to achieve their objectives while minimizing the cost and disruption to MPI.

A fourth business unit for Forestry will be officially launched by Minister Shane Jones on 11 May 2018.
