Orchard View is ready to cherry-bomb this Fourth of July with early Northwest cherry crop

Fourth-generation, Oregon-based grower Orchard View is setting off fireworks for America’s 250th with strong volumes of its premium cherry program. The earlier, high-quality Pacific Northwest crop, the company said, perfectly positions it to supply the critical holiday with powerful promotional programs.

The firm anticipates handling approximately 1.2 million boxes of premium cherries during the season, which is expected to conclude by the end of July.

"We're incredibly proud of the customer list we've built and even prouder of the quality we're seeing on the trees," Oppy's Director of Apples and Pears, Roger Aguirre, told FreshFruitPortal.com.

Vancouver-based produce giant Oppy has managed marketing for Orchard View’s cherry program for over 15 years.

Aguirre said the company has already secured orders for the season and expects strong sales throughout the period.

"The Fourth of July is the single biggest holiday for cherry sales. Our peak volume is set to coincide perfectly with that window. We are confident in a strong season," he said.

Aguirre also highlighted recent investments in sorting technology at Orchard View's packing operation. The grower's 48-lane Unitec system uses optical inspection technology to evaluate cherries for quality characteristics, including firmness, size, color, and defects, before packing.

"Consumers are the biggest beneficiaries of these upgrades, and retail partners can be fully assured that every cherry in the package has gone through the most stringent vetting process available, delivering greater consistency and a better eating experience for the shopper," the representative said.

Orchard View eyes global reach

While domestic promotions remain a key focus, export markets continue to play an important role for Northwest cherries.

Oppy’s Executive Director of Category Development, Piers Hanbury, said demand remains strong across Asia despite higher costs and evolving trade conditions.

"Freight rates have risen, and factors like currency exchange and tariffs are creating a more complex balance between domestic and export programs. Despite these headwinds, the quality and reputation of Pacific Northwest cherries continue to keep global demand high," Hanbury explained.

The comments come as Orchard View recently received the Global Trailblazer Award from the Oregon Consular Corps, in celebration of the company's contributions to international trade and the regional economy.

"This recognition is a tremendous honor. Orchard View is a family-owned operation that has cultivated strong export partnerships across Asia and beyond, helping put Oregon agriculture on the international map. It's a testament to the Thomas family, and to Pacific Northwest growers more broadly, who are elevating the reputation of US produce worldwide," Hanbury said.
