Peru’s watermelon exports triple in 2010, exporters group says
Peru exported 2,657 metric tons of watermelon from January through September, with a value of US $1.2 million, an increase of 202.1% from last year, when exports were valued at US $411,000, according to the Peruvian export group AMPEX.
Most of the watermelons were shipped in August, when 22.1% of the total export value was earned, representing 480 MT.
The Netherlands was the main market, generating 74% of the export value and taking in 1,744 MT, followed by Ecuador (13.3% of export value), United Kingdom (8.2%), Chile (3%) and Spain (1.5%), AMPEX said.
